There was anxiety on Thursday as another young Nigerian, Emmanuel Shekolo, announced that he was depressed.
“God, I am depressed!’, Shekolo, said to be a student of Nasarawa Polytechnic, Lafia, posted on his Facebook page.
He conspicuously planted the lamentation on a black background, a picture that scared many of his friends and others who read it.
Such people would no more take such screaming as a joke again, based on the experiences of recent months.
In 2019 alone, no fewer than four young Nigerians have committed suicide soon after they noted they were depressed or after showing the signs of this.
Among them was a Lagos-based DJ, Seun Omogaji, who killed himself in January.
There was also Hikmat Gbadamosi, a student of the University of Port Harcourt, who committed suicide after what was said to be a long battle with depression.
The latest is that of a brilliant student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Akachi, who committed suicide three days ago after giving indications of depression.
A businesswoman and counsellor, Bukoladeremi Ladigbolu, urged stakeholders to pay attention to Shekolo, a statement that attracted various interventionist comments by different people.
