"Atiku Won't Go To US Now, It's Campaign Period" ...media office source

Sources close to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, have dispelled claims in some quarters that the former Vice President was set to jet out of the country to the United States of America (USA).
It was learnt that Atiku had travelled to the UK last Thursday, but returned to the country to kick off his presidential campaign on Sunday in Sokoto.
A top source in the Atiku Media Office, who pleaded not to be mentioned said, “His Excellency embarked on a private visit to the UK, shortly after the inauguration of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja. He has since returned. I think that addresses the issue.”
When asked for more details, he said, “I just left him at his residence. He moved immediately to the Airport from the venue of the inauguration on Thursday, and then came back on Saturday.”

America Finally Grants Atiku Abubakar Entry Visa!

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has finally been issued a visa to the United States, reports indicate

It was confirmed that the former vice-president has left Nigeria for the UK, where he will spend some time before flying to the US.

TheCable also understands that former president Olusegun Obasanjo played a “critical” role in getting the American government to issue the visa to his former deputy with whom he was estranged for almost 15 years.

The trip marks another chapter in the controversy that has rocked the former vice-president for over a decade.
Atiku, who is widely travelled, has not been to the US in 13 years, intially fueling speculations that he might be avoiding possible arrest or prosecution.
His political opponents had used his absence from the US not just to taunt but to discredit him.

His row with the US authorities began after the FBI investigated a bribery scandal involving William Jefferson, former US congressman, in 2004.

Atiku was accused of demanding a bribe of $500,000 to facilitate the award of contracts to two American telecommunication firms in Nigeria.

The FBI had searched his residence in the posh neighbourhood of Potomac, Maryland, but no money was found.

The investigators had videotaped Jefferson, who was the congressman representing Louisiana, receiving $100,000 worth of $100 bills which he claimed was meant for Atiku, but the former vice-president has consistently denied the allegation.
Despite Atiku’s claim to innocence, the controversy raged.

Two months before he declared interest in the 2019 presidential race, Atiku granted an interview to Dele Mommodu, celebrity journalist, where he clarified his absence from the US.

“It is the sole prerogative of America to determine who they want in their country or not,” he said.
“I’m not running away from America. I applied but wasn’t issued a visa.”
He said the US did not categorically deny him visa.

“They’ve only said my application is going through administrative process,” he said.
On Thursday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, had warned the US to be cautious in granting visa to the main opponent of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Asked to comment on Atiku’s visa status on Friday, Rusell Brooks, spokesman of the US consulate in Lagos, had said issuance of visa to Nigerians irrespective of their status is strictly a confidential matter.

He said the US government would not discuss such confidentiality in public.
Some All Progressives Congress (APC) members had alleged that Brian Ballard, publicist of US President Donald Trump, was working towards relaxing the visa ban on Atiku.

HEALTHWISE: Sitting Too Long Can Harm You!

Dr Joe Ugwu, a Neurologist with a private hospital in Abuja, on Thursday said excessive sitting could lead to cardiovascular diseases and early mortality.
Ugwu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that sitting was a form of inactivity which slowed the body’s metabolism.

He said that sitting affects the ability to regulate blood sugar, increase blood circulation and break down fat.
“Although a slow metabolism is not hazardous to health; it only becomes a problem if one remains seated for a long period of time without any form of physical activity.

“You do not burn calories and the body begins to store up fat. This is when you give room for different kinds of diseases to also be at risk of premature death.
“A balance need to be struck through increased physical activity.
“Those who live sedentary lifestyle where they need to be seated for a long time should try to walk around at intervals; also rather than use elevator they can use the stairs.
“This will allow them to put in some activity even while living a sedentary life and help increase their metabolism and heart rate which is necessary to maintain a healthy life,’’ he said.
Ugwu also advised that people should see exercise as a way to keep fit and healthy rather than strictly for weight loss.
He added that this was not to burn fat but also to enable the body perform optimally.

Troops from 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt on Thursday shut down the training camp for the newly recruited youths of Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency at Nonwa Gbam in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
About 2,000 youths engaged by the Rivers State Government to complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force in providing security in all parts of the state were undergoing training at the camp before they were dispersed and the facility shut down by soldiers from the 6 Division.

He said preliminary investigations into the discovery have commenced in conjunction with sister security agencies in the state to fish out the sponsors of the militia and the training camp.
