E-Commerce Platforms Empowering Retail Businesses

Following the data from the National Bureau of Statistics as well as the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), that Micro and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) account for about 96 percent of registered Nigerian businesses that employs about 75% of the national labour force, and contributes about 48% to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it is clear that the Micro and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) form the bedrock of the economy.

It is as well worthy to note that e-commerce platforms operators in Nigeria are in no little way contributing to the promotion of MSMEs, as Alerzo, a leading e-commerce platform in Nigeria is making strides in empowering retail business owners with its various innovations including loan provisions.

With its cashless payment and lending platform – Alerzopay, Alerzo provides retailers, regardless of their economic situations, with working capital to keep their stores running and to drive financial inclusion to the excluded informal retailers.

With the advanced POS terminals that run on Alerzopay platform, retailers can act as agents: processing customer deposits and withdrawals to purchase goods or use as spending cash and process value added services such as utility bill payments, etc.

The integration of Alerzopay and the use of the POS machines in their customers' businesses improves their overall profit margins, as retailers receive commissions for each transaction carried out on the platform.

Nigerian Bakers Give Notice to Downtool *"there may be no N500 bread soon"

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterer of Nigeria has given a notice to embark on a nationwide strike due to the the unexpected increase in bakery materials and the ignore of the Federal Government in the matter.

The association made this known in a communiqué issued by its National Executive Council following a meeting of the council held in Abuja.

The communique which was obtained by newsmen on Friday, threatened that bakers would withdraw their services across the country from July 13, 2022.

They stated that the cost of flour, sugar and other materials used in bakery business has skyrocketed beyond the reach of many bakers.

A member of the bakers' association who didn't want to be identified by name, told The Status News that the lowest bread's could go for N1,000 should the bakers continue the production without the necessary government intervention.

Already, the smallest loaf of bread in Nigeria goes for N500 while the biggest costs as high as N1,200. This is against N350 and N750 each the cost before the increase in March 2022.

Soon, there won't be N500 bread, the source declared.

The bakers also stated that efforts to get government’s intervention in the matter had been proved abortive, as there have not been a positive response from the concerned ministries, departments and agencies of government.

The National President, Mansur Umar, who signed the communique, stated that the council reviewed the “neglect of the Federal Government in addressing the challenges facing our sector as captured in our letters acknowledged by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Federal Ministry of Finance, Central Bank of Nigeria and unproductive intervention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“Increase in prices of bakery materials especially flour and sugar having reached unprecedented levels, for example, flour is now between N25,000 and N27,500, so also other ingredients.

“The National Wheat Cultivation Committee already constituted is yet to be inaugurated after over one year. NAFDAC, SON, NESREA have turned the bakers into money making machine by charging our members outrageous levies even at this very challenging moment.

“Consequently, the NEC in session resolved that all zones, state, Local Governments and units of our association should commence full mobilisation of our members nationwide to embark on withdrawal of services starting from Wednesday July 13, 2022 for an initial period of two weeks.”

They, however, noted that its “members should await further directives.”

It was learnt that the hike in bakery materials was what led to the recent increase in the cost of bread and other items produced from flour.
