Inside sources told The Status that since his celebrated arrest and humiliation for alleged drug smuggling by the NDLEA, Babatunde Omidina a.k.a. Baba Suwe, has never remained his lively self.
He's down with an unknown sickness, claimed sources.
The star humorist, The Status gathered,
went down physically, financially and professionally, no thanks to his colleagues and close allies in the theatre business who have shown lack of interest in his case since 2016 when he literally disappeared from the social radar.
A younger artiste, Yomi Fabiyi, it was who brought Baba Suwe’s case to the public knowledge three years ago. Whilst he appealed to the public and colleagues to help him back on his health, Fabiyi added that the veteran comic star was down financially too and needed funds to return to life, literally.
Once the toast of most Nigerian families for his creative humour on TVs and later home videos, Baba Suwe, weighed down by the psychological trauma borne out of the public opprobrium experienced in the wake of his time with NDLEA, soon fell ill after his arrest and has yet to recover.
Baba Suwe’s actress wife and confidant, Omoladun, died in 2009. Those in the know say that that was the real genesis of Baba Suwe’s fast descent into social and professional worthlessness.
A Lagos based seasoned radio broadcaster (who pleaded anonymity) during the investigation, informed The Status that no one among Baba Suwe’s friends and professional colleagues was willing to help solve his challenge.
Prodded to expatiate, the radio man who claimed he had personally called out such big names like Oga Bello, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Mr. Latin and others on the comedian’s present sorry state, stated that he felt they were running away from Baba Suwe not because he was not good to them but because they are selfish in nature.
"Baba Suwe is a good man. None of his people can say he is bad. And they are not helping him not because he behaved badly to them. They are not helping him because they care only about their family. That’s the nature of our actors, there is no exception. Imagine the caliber of people I told you
But if, God forbid, he dies from the problem, they would be all over the place eulogising his qualities which they helped killed by their lack of empathy," the broadcaster notes.
Attempts by The Status to speak with any of the names mentioned were futile as their phones were either unavailable or went unanswered. The current location of Baba Suwe was also not known as he was said to have been moved from his once bustling Ebute Metta, Lagos office.
